Why Are Arts and Crafts So Trendy Right Now?

You've seen the headlines. Creativity is now getting the same praise as exercise and diet. Grandma hobbies, knitting, embroidery, quilting, are everywhere on social media. Turns out there's real research behind why it feels so good.

Here's the thing: we don't program based on trends. But it's nice when the science backs up what we've believed since we opened.

What the research says ‍

  • A UCL study found people who regularly participate in the arts age more slowly than those who don't.

  • An Anglia Ruskin University study found arts and crafts can be as good for wellbeing as having a job.

  • The "grandmacore" trend isn't just an aesthetic. Experts point to the same reasons: screen-free, repetitive in a good way, something to show for your time.

‍ ‍

None of this is news if you've sat at one of our tables with a needle or a paintbrush in hand. Just nice to have the science catch up.

How we build our schedule

We don't chase trends. We ask.

We've surveyed our email list. Polled students mid-class. Asked our teaching artists what they want to teach. A good chunk of this summer's lineup came straight out of those conversations.

This month, Shibori taught a table full of people that you can control your effort but not the outcome. Embroidery reminded everyone that slow, repetitive work is still worth doing. The life lessons show up whether you're looking for them or not.

What's still ahead this July, and why you'll be glad you made the time for it

The Fun & Fundamentals of Watercolor: Sunflower Themed — Tuesday, July 14, 5:30–7:30pm For anyone who needs proof that a wobbly petal is still a petal. Watercolor forgives more than you think.

Intuitive Collage — Wednesday, July 15, 10am–12pm For the overthinker who needs permission to stop planning and just start gluing. Nothing has to make sense until it does.

Intro to Embroidery: Stitch a Beach Scene — Sunday, July 19, 1–3pm For anyone who wants a slow afternoon that ends with something finished in your hands. You'll leave with your hoop and a reason to keep stitching.

You don't need a trend to tell you creativity is good for you. But if a trendy video gets you in the door, we'll take it.
