Why We Keep Adding Embroidery and Hand Stitching to Our Schedule

Embroidery isn't always our fastest-filling workshop. And yet we keep bringing it back.

Here's why.

Every time we put an embroidery workshop on the schedule — taught by one of the most enthusiastic and talented crafters we personally know, Kirsten Nunez of Supernova Crafts — something happens in that room. People who have always been curious about stitching finally try it. People who got stuck somewhere along the way get unstuck. And sometimes, honestly, someone just signs up because the stitched turnip on the flyer caught their eye.

But here's what we've seen every time: people love the feel of pulling thread through fabric. They laugh at how awkward it is to thread a needle. They leave with something they made by hand — and someone has even hugged Kirsten on the way out the door because they just enjoyed it that much.

That's why we bring it back. And for what it's worth — our Embroidered Cards workshop did sell out. So there's that.

This summer we've put four embroidery and hand-stitching workshops on the schedule. Two with Kirsten focused on embroidery, one exploring the beautiful tradition of Kawandi quilting with Jenny Torino — a hand-stitched patchwork practice from the Siddi community of India — and one where you'll stitch directly on paper to create handmade cards you can actually send.

Not because we're chasing a trend. Because it's a skill that travels with you — to the beach, on the plane, in your backyard. Something you might enjoy a whole lot more than just reading on the way to your summer destination.

The four workshops

Decorative Embroidery: Embellish a Summer Tank
Saturday, July 12, 10am–12:30pm · $45
Bring a tank, t-shirt, shorts, or tote. Leave with something you made by hand.

Intro to Embroidery: Stitch a Beach Scene
Sunday, July 19, 1–3pm · $55
Learn the basics and leave with the skills to keep stitching on your own.

Embroidered Cards: Flowers or Sea Shells
Sunday, August 2, 10am–1pm · $45
Learn to embroider directly on paper — a skill you can use on photos, postcards, book covers, and beyond.

Kawandi Quilt Making
Sunday, August 9, 10am–2pm · $105
A half-day workshop exploring a hand-stitched quilting tradition from India. Bring fabric scraps, or use ours.

All four are beginner friendly and held at That Creative Space, 333 Fishkill Ave, Beacon, NY. Classes are small by design — so if you already know the basics, there's always room to go deeper.

Whether you're planning a summer trip through Beacon or you live right here — come stitch something.
