An October That’s More Treat Than Trick
September was a big month at That Creative Space.
We celebrated our first anniversary in Beacon, opened our first group exhibition, What We Carry, filled the studio (and backyard!) with indigo during our Shibori workshop, and launched Meet & Make, our new monthly social crafting series.
Our first Meet & Make sold out, bringing together people who are new-ish to the area for an afternoon of turning upcycled buttons into bracelets, necklaces, and barrettes. Somewhere between making, we traded favorite local restaurants, talked about the TV shows we’re watching (and our guilty pleasures), and started making some new connections too.
That was really the hope behind Meet & Make: an easy, low-pressure way to make something with your hands while getting to know a few more people in the community.
And September wasn’t just about the anniversary. We painted, drew, needle felted some very cute dogs, tried new things, and welcomed plenty of people into the studio for the first time.
After all that, you might think we’d take October off.
Not quite.
October Art Workshops in Beacon, NY
October at That Creative Space is looking much more treat than trick, with beginner-friendly art classes and creative workshops in block printing, watercolor, embroidery, drawing, needle felting, intuitive painting, and more.
Whether you want to learn a new skill, get back to something you haven’t done in years, meet some new people, or simply give yourself a couple of hours to make something, there are plenty of ways to join us this month.
Give your fall wardrobe a second life
We’re kicking off October with Block Printing: Upcycle Your Fall Wardrobe on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Participants will learn the basics of block printing and use their own designs to transform clothing and fabric they already own.
This workshop has reached capacity, so registration is now closed — but if block printing is something you’d like to try, keep an eye on future workshop dates.
Our Weaving in the Round workshop on Sunday, Oct. 4 has also sold out.
It’s always exciting to see these smaller, hands-on classes fill because we intentionally keep many of our workshops intimate enough for instructors to give everyone individual attention.
Paint the Hudson Valley in fall
Intro to Watercolor: Autumn Landscapes
Wednesday, Oct. 7 | 5:30–7:30 PM
There may not be a better time to try landscape painting than October in the Hudson Valley.
This beginner-friendly watercolor workshop is designed to guide you through the process step by step while exploring some of the colors and textures of the season.
No watercolor experience is necessary, and we still have a few spaces available.
Get cozy with embroidery
Intro to Embroidery: Autumn Tea Towels
Saturday, Oct. 10 | 10 AM–1 PM
It’s the season for pumpkin spice... and perhaps a new tea towel embroidered with your favorite autumn motifs.
Our embroidery workshops are great for complete beginners or anyone who knows a few stitches and wants to build their skills. We keep the group intentionally small so there’s time for individual guidance.
All materials are included, and you’ll leave with your project plus a hoop, needle, and thread so you can continue stitching at home.
Try figure drawing without the intimidation factor
Clothed Figure Drawing
Monday, Oct. 12 | 6–8 PM
Over the last year, we’ve been asked more than a few times whether we’d offer a figure drawing class. If you’ve been following That Creative Space for a while, you know your feedback really does help shape our programming.
This month, teaching artist Michael Hollick will lead a clothed figure drawing session designed to be approachable for beginners while still giving more experienced artists plenty to explore.
Our model will pose in a variety of creative costumes and outfits, offering opportunities to work with gesture, expressive drapery, interesting textures, and character.
If figure drawing has been sitting on your “someday I’d like to try that” list, this is a welcoming place to start.
Think you can’t draw? This one is for you.
Drawing for the Petrified
New session begins Wednesday, Oct. 14
This four-week drawing class is made especially for adults who want to learn to draw but feel intimidated by it.
Maybe you haven’t drawn since school. Maybe someone convinced you a long time ago that you “weren’t artistic.” Or maybe you simply don’t know where to begin.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s building foundational skills, getting more comfortable looking and drawing, and getting past some of the fear of the blank page.
We currently have one more registration needed for the class to run, so if you’ve been considering it, this is a good time to jump in.
A little Halloween making
Needle Felted Halloween Decorations
Saturday, Oct. 17 | 2–4:30 PM
October wouldn’t be complete without at least one slightly spooky craft.
Learn the basics of needle felting while creating playful Halloween decorations to bring home for the season.
Like many of our workshops at That Creative Space, this one is designed to be approachable even if you’ve never tried the technique before.
Meet, make + maybe leave knowing someone new
Meet & Make: Junk Journaling
Sunday, Oct. 18 | 2–4 PM
Meet & Make returns on the third Sunday of the month with Junk Journaling, hosted by Kelly M. La Rosa.
Meet & Make is our monthly social crafting event for adults who want to make something, meet some people, and spend an afternoon doing something a little different.
Each month, we invite someone new-ish to the area who’s passionate about a craft to share it with others. You don’t need to be “crafty,” and you definitely don’t need to arrive knowing anyone.
Our first Meet & Make sold out, so if you missed September’s event, we recommend registering early for October.
An evening to make a little time for yourself
Intuitive Painting
Wednesday, Oct. 21 | 7–9 PM
We hear from people all the time who would love to take one of our workshops but simply can’t get away during the day.
So we added a special evening Intuitive Painting workshop for anyone coming after work, after dinner, or after finally getting everyone else settled for the night.
This isn’t about painting something perfectly or following a reference image step by step. It’s a chance to slow down, experiment, follow your instincts, and spend a couple of hours making without worrying too much about the outcome.
No painting experience is necessary.
Already thinking about holiday crafts?
We are too.
Our holiday workshops are now live, with handmade projects coming in November and December, including ornaments, make-your-own holiday watercolor cards, fiber arts, and other creative ways to spend a little time making during the holidays.
We’ll also be hosting a Holiday Makers Market on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 2–5:30 PM, featuring local artists and makers.
And if you’d rather give someone the experience of making something themselves, That Creative Space gift cards are available too.
